With my travels back and forth across Canada I have had the great fortune to see amazingly beautiful wildlife and scenery. It is still an absolute thrill to catch sight of an eagle, a bear, moose or elk. Gosh, even flocks of Canada Geese still have my eyes glued to their formations. Road trip continuing – Alberta

The temperature was a mere 1°C when I left Ontario; on arrival in Medicine Hat it was a very hot, dry 32°C! And I was traveling with sweatshirts, winter boots, parka – you get the picture …

I decided to take a side trip to Dinosaur Provincial Park, north-east of Brooks. It was well worth the time, and if you have never been, I highly recommend this trip. The drive in is a fairly flat, nondescript landscape. What a different view once you reach the perimeter of the Park! Extremely high winds prevented me from using my tripod or keeping sufficiently still so there was no standing on the edge for me! I drove down into the park and as you came along side some of the formations they became even more impressive and colourful. Hiking was kept to a minimum as due to the extreme heat the rattle snakes had not gone into hibernation, and it was just too hot and dusty.

Road trip continuing – Saskatchewan

As I continued my drive through the southern parts of Manitoba and into Saskatchewan, I saw so many large farmlands abandoned and beautiful land cleared for oil drilling. I felt quite sad, not only for those who no longer farmed what were homesteads, but for the sense of community that may have perished as well. This became more poignant when I was directed by a passing motorist to visit an old stone church being dismantled. As I wandered around the property, taking in the magnificent and expansive view, I couldn’t help but feel a loss, even though I personally had not been in this spot before. And I wondered, in the near future, where will our foods come from when fertile tracks of land are being cleared for oil, housing subdivisions and other commercial ventures? Continue reading
